From the Principal's Desk:
"I truly believe that my role as a principal goes beyond just running a school—it’s about helping others discover their purpose and how they can contribute to the world.
When I think about students, I don't just want them to learn academic content; I want them to figure out what they want to do in the world. It's about giving them the space to think about themselves, what matters to them, and how they can make a difference. I want to empower them to own their futures.
Middle school is such a pivotal time. It’s when kids are figuring out who they are, what they believe, and what they want to stand for. I think that’s the beauty of this age. They’re shaping their identities, and I get to be part of that process. It’s challenging, but I think it’s incredibly important. I see myself as a guide during that time, helping them find their voice and giving them the tools to navigate the world.
It’s all about thinking—helping students understand that change is a part of life, but it has to be intentional. It’s not enough to just go through the motions; they need to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing, why it matters. It’s about ownership, not just of their learning, but of their journey. They have to understand that they have the power to shape their own path. I believe schools are the heart of communities. If we can make positive changes in our schools, it’ll radiate out to families, neighborhoods, and beyond.
Schools can be a place of transformation, not just for the students, but for everyone involved. I always want to push people to be their very best. When they’re operating at their highest potential, that’s when real change happens.
I hold high expectations for both staff and students, but it’s important that they understand exactly what I expect from them.
Consistency is key. When everyone can articulate the values and standards we uphold here, I know we’re on the right track. If they can’t explain it, then I’m not doing my job. At the end of the day, I want people to feel something when they walk through these doors. I want them to feel safe, supported, and empowered. I want them to believe in the possibilities for their futures and understand that there’s always room to grow. That’s how I measure success—not just in grades or tests, but in how we make people feel.
My vision for Bushwick is to be the best school in Brooklyn, where we have the right people committed to a shared mission.
Our community is primarily Latino and Latinx, many of whom are immigrants facing difficult challenges. I want our school to be a safe space where these families find hope, knowing their children are on a path to a brighter future. Given the fear caused by the political climate, we create an environment where students feel secure and supported. They can focus on being kids without worrying about what’s happening outside. I hear heartbreaking stories from parents, but our priority is showing them that their children will thrive here.
My hope for my students is simple: I want them to know that no dream is too big. Every child has the tools to succeed. I've worked on helping students connect to each other and understand that they belong to a community. Vision boarding showed me how many of them want to give back—whether that’s by becoming a firefighter or building a business to help others. I want them to see how their passions can lift up those around them.
Our school stands out because we find ways to support our students no matter what. We have strong programs like computer science, dance, and PE, and my staff started a basketball team to engage students. Last year, we competed against other Brooklyn schools, and the girls wanted to join too, so we started a girls’ team. This year, we're in a charter school league, and the commitment from the students is incredible.
My team goes above and beyond. They don’t wait for the perfect resources—they make things happen. Whether it’s through sports or other programs, our focus is always on what’s best for the kids. I’m so grateful for them and the difference we’re making together."
